The geographical area of the IGP follows the Loire river for around 550 kilometers (350 miles). It reaches as far inland as the Auvergne hills in the center of France.
Twelve of the 14 departments covered by the IGP can append their name to the label where wines come exclusively from that department. These departments are Allier, Cher, Indre, Indre-et-Loire, Loir-et-Cher, Loire-Atlantique, Loiret, Maine-et-Loire, Nièvre, Sarthe, Vendée and Vienne.
